Much Wenlock & Wroxeter Roman City

Thursday 6th August

Enjoy a fascinating and leisurely summer day out exploring two of Shropshire’s most historic and characterful destinations. Our day begins in the charming market town of Much Wenlock, known for its attractive streets, independent shops, welcoming cafés, and rich heritage.

Much Wenlock is proudly recognised as the birthplace of the Much Wenlock Olympian Games, first held in 1850 by local doctor William Penny Brookes, who believed in the importance of sport and culture for all. His work later inspired Pierre de Coubertin, whose visit to the town helped shape the creation of the modern Olympic Games, giving Much Wenlock a unique place in Olympic history.

There will be plenty of free time to enjoy lunch, browse at your own pace, or take a gentle stroll around the town. Highlights include the picturesque ruins of Much Wenlock Priory and the traditional high street, all set within the beautiful Shropshire countryside.

In the afternoon, we continue to Wroxeter Roman City (English Heritage site), one of the most important Roman archaeological sites in Britain. Once the fourth-largest Roman settlement in the country, Wroxeter offers a fascinating insight into Roman life, with impressive ruins, reconstructed buildings, and informative displays that bring history vividly to life.
