Stow on the Wold & Sulgrave Manor

Tuesday 14th October

Stow-on-the-Wold was a major centre for the wool trade in the Cotswolds, particularly during the medieval and early modern periods.

Today it will our coffee and lunch stop. We will have time to explore the town before heading to our next visit….

Carrying on our sheep theme…. Sulgrave Manor was built in 1539 for Tudor wool merchant Lawrence Washington, a direct ancestor of George Washington, the future first President of the United States. It remained in the ownership of the Washington family for only two generations, and was sold out of the family in 1659. Substantial alterations were made to the house in the 18th century and during the following century it was inhabited by a succession of tenant farmers.

Here we will have exclusive access to the Manor house to enjoy a guided visit, explore the George Washington exhibition, take a leisurely stroll through the historic garden with light refreshments before heading home.

Timings: Leave Leominster 8:45am., Hereford at 9:15am., Ross on Wye 10am. We will depart and travel back to Ross 6:30pm, Hereford at 7:00pm and then Leominster at 7:30pm.
