Chipping Sodbury & National Trust Avebury Manor & Garden

Wednesday 14th October

Chipping Sodbury is a delightful market town in South Gloucestershire, founded in the 12th century by William le Gros.

Its long and attractive High Street is lined with historic buildings, independent shops, traditional pubs, tea rooms and cafés, making it a lovely place to explore at leisure for our lunch time visit. We will then make our way to Wiltshire this afternoon.

Following extensive conservation and restoration work, Avebury Manor has now reopened with a brand-new visitor experience. Following significant flooding, specialist teams have carefully restored the Grade I listed 16th-century manor, bringing its fascinating history back to life.

The new “Avebury as Home” experience explores the stories of the many people who lived and worked here over the centuries — from Tudor courtiers and farming families to archaeologists, servants and children. The gardens are arranged as a series of individual “rooms”, each with its own character, offering plenty of places to wander, relax and enjoy the colours and scents of the surroundings.
