Chipping Norton and Rousham House & Gardens, Oxfordshire
Tuesday 1st September
We begin our day in the charming market town of Chipping Norton, often described as the “gateway to the Cotswolds”. With its honey-coloured stone buildings, independent shops and welcoming cafés, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a relaxed wander, morning coffee and lunch before we continue our journey.
On arrival at Rousham House and Gardens, in the afternoon we’ll enjoy a guided tour of the house, discovering its fascinating history and elegant interiors before exploring the grounds at leisure.
The gardens at Rousham are a masterpiece of 18th-century landscape design, created by the celebrated designer William Kent. Unlike many historic gardens, Rousham remains wonderfully unchanged — allowing visitors to experience Kent’s vision much as it was originally intended.
In early September, one of the highlights is the walled rose garden, where a spectacular long bed of dahlias steals the show. The colours are simply amazing — rich crimsons, glowing oranges, soft pinks and deep purples providing a glorious late-summer display.
It’s no surprise that this is one of Monty Don’s favourite gardens.
