We will learn then about its history and the woman who built it, but free introductions are also available every 30 minutes. There will be time to explore independently. There is a short walk from coach park to visitor centre and another to the house (buggy available).
The house has wide staircases with rails. You might like to view Hidden Treasures of the National Trust (Series 1/Episode 1)on BBC Iplayer. Hardwick Hall is the first item.
Hardwick Old Hall was the first house that Bess built on the site of her birthplace. It is now a ruin, but well worth a visit. There are 120 wide steps to the viewing point with plenty of resting places. Here you can enjoy great views of the surrounding countryside.

Simon Jenkins described this as “The most perfect house to survive from the Middle Ages”. We will enjoy a private tour of the house led by an expert guide. It has fine Tudor and Elizabethan architecture, delightful walled gardens and extensive parkland. Due to its age, access for visitors with restricted mobility is challenging. There are many uneven floors and steps without handrails. Please ask if in doubt.
