Llangollen & Plas Newydd House

Wednesday 12th June

We head north to the popular tourist town of Llangollen, situated on the River Dee. We have free time here to explore and have lunch.

Then in the afternoon, we head a short distance to Plas Newydd Historic House.

In 1780, Lady Eleanor Butler and Miss Sarah Ponsonby moved into an unassuming stone cottage on the outskirts of Llangollen. Over the next 50 years, they devoted their lives to converting the building into a gothic fantasy, and the gardens into a haven of different landscapes to appeal to the creative senses.

Inside the building you’ll see carved oak and stained glass rescued from local churches that were being restored. On display are some of their possessions and there is an audio tour to tell you the fascinating story of the ‘Ladies of Llangollen’ who caused such astir when they ran away together to set up home in North Wales.

We will then have tea and cake in the tea room, before heading home.
